Merkel cell carcinoma:
i. Originally thought to be a variant of squamous cell carcinoma, only recently demonstrated by immuno histochemical markers, that they are of neuroepithelial differentiation.
ii. Associated With synchronous or metasynchronous squamous cell carcinoma 25% of time.
iii. Very aggressive & wide local resector with 3 cm margin is recommended.
iv. Prophylactic regional lymph node dissection and adjuvant radiation therapy recommended.
v. Prognosis worse than malignant melanoma.
