a. Alpha and beta are energy particles . Alpha "rays" are Helium atoms. They are big and heavy particles and therefore cannot penetrate to deep lengths.
b. Beta "rays" are either electrons or positrons. They are much lighter than Alpha rays - Helium. Because they are electrically charged particles, penetration is limited. and thus are stopped by the electrons around other atoms.
c. Gamma rays are real rays - They are electromagnetic waves like light. They are much like x-rays. In fact hard x-rays and soft gamma rays are almost the same. Gamma rays have much shorter wavelength and thus higher energy than x-rays. So they have the highest penetration power.
