Question

Xanthurenic acid is a product of metabolism of

A Tryptophan
B Glucuronic acid

C Xanthine
D None of the above

Ans. A Tryptophan
  1. Kynurenine and Hydroxykynurenine are catabolic intermediate products, in the pathway of tryptophan catabolism.
  2. Normally, Kynurenine and Hydroxykynurenine are converted to Hydroxyanthranilate by Enzyme
  3. Kynureninase which is a pyridoxal phosphate (vit. B6) dependent enzyme.
  4. In- vit B6 deficiency, result in partial failure to catabolize these Kynureninederivates and these are
  5. converted into xanthurenate which is excreted in urine. Xanthurenic acid index is a reliable criteria for Vit. B6 deficiency.
  6. Xanthine is an intermediate catabolic product of purines metabolism, which is converted into uric acid by Xanthine oxidase.
