Meaning of Company

The word “Company” is derived from two Latin words ‘Com’ and ‘Panis’ where ‘Com’ means ‘together’ and ‘Panis’ means ‘bread’.

Thus, a Company means an association of persons formed for some common purpose or object.

In the words of Lord Justice Hanay, a Company is “an artificial person created by law with a perpetual succession and a common seal.”

According to The Companies Act, 1956, a Company is defined as “a Company formed and registered under this Act or an existing Company.” An existing Company means a Company formed and registered under any of the previous Companies Act.
