Algebraic Operations on Sets

Idempotent operation : For any set A, we have

  1. A  A = A and
  2. A  A = A

Identity operation : For any set A, we have

  1. A  φ = A and
  2. A  U = A
i.e. φ and U are identity elements for union and intersection respectively.

Commutative operation : For any set A and B, we have

  1. A  B = B  A
  2. A  B = B  A and
  3. A Δ B = B Δ A
i.e. union intersection and symmetric difference of two sets are commutative.

A – B ≠ B – A and A × B ≠ B × A
