Intervals and Notations

The domain and the range for different functions are the subsets of real numbers which are called intervals.

Open Interval:
If  can take values which lie strictly between  and, then we can write (a, b are not included)  or

Closed Interval:
If  can take values which lie strictly between  and  or equal to  or equal to b, then we can write  or

Half-open Interval:
If only one end point is included for values of , then the interval is called as half-open interval. In first example only b is included and in second only a is included.
