The following sketch shows the pipelines carrying material form one location to another. Each location has a demand for material. The demand at Vaishali is 400 at Mathura is 400, at Jhampur is 700 and at Vidisha is 200. Each arrow indicates the direction of material flow through the pipeline. The flow from Vaishali to Mathura is 300; the quantity of material flow is such that the demands at all these locations are exactly met. The capacity of each pipeline is 1000. 

 

 

1. What is the free capacity available in the Avanti-Vidisha Pipeline?

2. What is the free capacity available from Avanti to Vaishali?

3. The quantity moved from Avanti to Vidisha is

How to attempt:

1. 4 Note that Vaishali – Mathura carries 300, leaving a shortfall of 100 as demand is 400.

        Also Jhampur (700) also has to be met. So Vidisha – Mathura must carry 100 + 700 = 800.

        Since Vidisha takes 200, this means that all 800 must be carried by this pipeline, leaving free capacity = 0

 

2. 4 Avanti - Vaishali carries 400 + 300 = 700; hence spare capacity = 300.


3. 4 Avanti - Vidisha = 200 + 800 = 1000, hence full capacity.
