Hierarchy of Operations

In simplifying an expression, first of all vinculum or bar must be removed.

After removing the bar, the brackets must be removed, strictly in the order ( ), { } and [ ].

After removing the brackets, we must use the following operations, strictly in the order, given below.

(i) Of (ii) Division (iii) Multiplication

(iv) Addition and (v) Subtraction

Remember the word, ‘BODMAS’, whereB, O, D, M, A and S stand for Bracket, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction respectively. Strictly follow the above order of operation.

Illustration 14:

Simplify: 2 [3 – {6 – (5 – 4 – 3)}].

Solution

= 2 – [3 – {6 – (5 – 1)}]

= 2 – [3 – {6 – 4}]

= 2 – [3 – 2] = (2 – 1) = 1.
