Coding-Decoding

A CODE is a ‘system of signals’. Therefore, Coding is a method of transmitting a message between the sender and the receiver without a third person knowing it. The Coding and Decoding Test is set up to judge the candidate’s ability to decipher the rule that codes a particular word/message and break the code to decipher the message.

Type 1

In these questions, the letters in a word are replaced by certain other letter according to a specific rule to form its code. The candidate is required to detect the coding pattern/rule and answer the questions accordingly.

Example
In a certain code, TEACHER is written as VGCEJGT. How is CHILDREN written in that code?
  1. EJKNEGTP
  2. EGKNFITP
  3. EJKNFGTO
  4. EJKNFTGP
  5. None of These
Solution
Clearly, each letter in the word TEACHER is moved two steps forward to obtain corresponding letter of the code. T→V, E→G, A→C, C→E, H→J, E→G, R→T;

Similarly, we have C→E, H→J, I→K, L→N, D→F, R→T, E→G, N→P. So, the desired code is EJKNFTGP. Hence, the answer is (d).

Example-2
In a certain code language, RUSTICATE written as QTTIDBSD. How would STATISTIC be written in that code?
  1. RSBUJTUHB
  2. RSBUITUHB
  3. RSBUIRSJD
  4. TUBUITUMB
  5. None of These
Solution
Clearly, the middle letter of the word remains unchanged in the code. Each of the first two and the last two letters of the word is moved one step backward, while each of the remaining letters is moved one step forward to obtain the corresponding letters of code.

R→Q, U→T, S→T, T→U, I→I, C→D, A→B, T→S, E→D. Similarly, we have: S→R, T→S, A→B, T→U, I→I, S→T, T→U, I→H, C→B. So, the required code is RSBUITUHB. Hence, the answer is (b).

Example-3
In a certain code, BREAKTHROUGH is written as EAOUHRBRGRKT. How is DISTRIBUTION written in that code?
  1. TISTBUONDIRI
  2. STTIBUONRIDI
  3. STTIBUDIONRI
  4. RISTTIBUDION
  5. None of these
Solution
Let us divide the letters of the given word into pairs and label these pairs from 1 to 6.
BR(1) EA(2) KT(3) HR(4) OU(5) GH(6), Clearly, the code contains these pairs arranged in the order 2, 5, 4, 1, 6,

Dividing the letters of the word DISTRIBUTION in pairs, we have: DI(1), ST(2), RI(3), BU(4), TI(5), ON(6). Arranging these in the order 2, 5, 4, 1, 6, 3, we get the required code i.e. STTIBUDIONRI. So, the answer is (c).

Type 2

Code is given in statement and you have to find out code for every word using desire statement. this type of question come in set of 5-7 question in PO exam.

Directions (1 - 5):

Read the information given below to answer the questions that follow: in a certain code language

  1. ‘you are good’ means ‘ni za ri’
  2. ‘you are with me’ means ‘ri si ni ti’
  3. ‘meet good person’ means ‘ap li za’
  4. ‘you are me’ means ‘ri ni ti’
  5. ‘meet me now’ means ‘ku ti ap’

Example-1
In this code language, ‘good’ refers to
  1. ku
  2. ti
  3. si
  4. za
  5. Cannot be determined
Solution
Use different symbols to different words as:

Now from statement (iii) per son àLi
Statement (v) now à ku
Also from (i) , (ii) and (iii) you are à ni ri
From (ii) with à si
So,

Ans. D: good àza

Here we have code for them in this language. So, a new code word will be taken with either ni or ri.

Example-2
Here ‘you’ refers to
  1. ni
  2. ri
  3. za
  4. li
  5. Cannot be determined
Solution
Use different symbols to different words as:

Now from statement (iii) per son àLi
Statement (v) now à ku
Also from (i) , (ii) and (iii) you are à ni ri
From (ii) with à si
So,

Ans. E: We cannot say you is either ni or ri

Here we have code for them in this language. So, a new code word will be taken with either ni or ri.

Example-3
In this code language ‘you are good person’ is written as
  1. ‘ri ni za li
  2. ri za li si
  3. ri za li ti
  4. Cannot be determined
  5. None of these
Solution
Use different symbols to different words as:

Now from statement (iii) per son àLi
Statement (v) now à ku
Also from (i) , (ii) and (iii) you are à ni ri
From (ii) with à si
So,

Ans. A: You are good person à ri ni za li

Here we have code for them in this language. So, a new code word will be taken with either ni or ri.

Example-4
To which word code ‘si’ stands?
  1. with
  2. me
  3. meet
  4. are
  5. good
Solution
Use different symbols to different words as:

Now from statement (iii) per son àLi
Statement (v) now à ku
Also from (i) , (ii) and (iii) you are à ni ri
From (ii) with à si
So,

Ans. A: si à with

Here we have code for them in this language. So, a new code word will be taken with either ni or ri.

Example-5
In this code language ‘now you meet them’ may be written as:
  1. ri ap pi za
  2. ri ni ku pi
  3. ni ap pi ku
  4. si ap ku za
  5. None of these
Solution
Use different symbols to different words as:

Now from statement (iii) per son àLi
Statement (v) now à ku
Also from (i) , (ii) and (iii) you are à ni ri
From (ii) with à si
So,

Ans. C: Now you meet them à ni ap pi ku.

Here we have code for them in this language. So, a new code word will be taken with either ni or ri.
