In a row of 40 girls, when Komal was shifted to her left by 4 places her number from the left end of the row became 10. What was the number of Swati from the right end of the row if Swati was three places to the right of Komal’s original position?

Solution
On shifting 4 places to the left, Komal is 10th from the left end of the row. Thus, Komal’s original position was 14th from the left end.

Swati is 3 places to the right of Komal’s original position. Clearly, Swati is 17th from the left end. Number of girls to the right of Swati = (40 – 17) = 23. Thus, Swati is 24th from the right end of the row. Hence, the answer is (e).
 
 
Example-2
Aman is 16th from the left end in a row of boys and Vivek is 18th from the right end. Gagan is 11th from Aman towards the right and 3rd from Vivek towards the right end. How many boys are there in the row?

Solution
Vivek is 18th from the right end, and Gagan is third to the right of Vivek. So, Gagan is 15th from the right end. Thus, there are 15 boys to the left of Aman; 10 boys between Aman and Gagan; and 14 boys to the right of Gagan.

Solution
Clearly, number of boys towards the of Manik = (40 – 14) = 26. Hence, the answer is (d).
 
 
Example-4
In a row of boys facing the North, A is sixteenth from the left end and C is sixteenth from the right end. B who is fourth to the right of A, is fifth to the left of C in the row. How many boys are there in the row?

Solution
Clearly, according to the given conditions, there are 15 boys to the left of A, as well as to the right of C. Also, B lies between A and C such that there are 3 boys between A and B; and 4 boys between B and C.
 
 
Example-5
A man is facing west. He turns 45˚ in the clockwise direction and then another 180˚ in the same direction and then 270˚ in the anti-clockwise direction. Which direction is he facing now?

Solution
Clearly, the man initially faces in the direction OA. On moving 45 clockwise, he faces in the direction OB. On further moving 180 clockwise, he faces in the direction OC. Finally, on moving 270 anti-clockwise, he faces in the direction OD, which is South-west, Hence, the answer is (d).

If you are facing north-east and move 10 m forward, turn left and move 7.5 m, then you are

Solution
Clearly, the narrator starts from A, moves towards north-east a distance of 10 m up to B, turns left (90 anti clock-wise) and moves 7.5 m up to C. Clearly, C lies to the north of A.
 
 
Example-7
One day, Kiran left home and cycled 10 km southwards, turned right and cycled 5 km and turned right and cycled 10 km and turned left and cycled 10 km. How many kilometers will he have to cycle to reach his home straight?

Solution
Clearly, Kiran starts from home at A, moves 10 km south wards upto B, Turns right and moves 5 km up to C, turns right again and moves 10 km upto D and finally turns left and moves 10 km upto E. Thus, his distance from initial position A = AE = AD + DE = BC + DE = (5 + 10) km = 15 km. Hence, the answer is (b)
 
 
Example-8
A child is looking for his father. He went 90 meters in the east before turning to his right. He went 20 meters before turning to his right again to look or his father at his uncle’s place 30 meters from this point. His father was not there. From there, he went 100 meters to his north before meeting his father in a street. How far did the son meet his father form the starting point?

  2. 100 metres
  3. 140 metres

Clearly, the child moves from A, 90 m to eastwards upto B, then turns right and moves 20 m up to C, then turns right and moves 30 m up to D. finally he turns right and moves 100m up to E. Clearly, AB = 90 m, BF = CD = 30 m. So, AF = AB – BF = 60 m. Also, DE = 100m, DF = BC = 20m. So, EF = DE – DF = 80m. So, His distance from starting point A = AE = √(AF)2 + (EF)2 = √602 + 802 = √3600 + 6400 = √10000 = 100 m.
