Surface Tension

Surface tension is the property by virtue of which the free surface of a liquid at rest behaves like a stretched elastic membrane tending to contract to possess minimum surface area.

Let F be the force acting and l be the length of the imaginary line, then surface tension (denoted by g) is given by γ = F/l.

The unit of surface tension in CGS system is dyn/cm, and in SI system, the unit is N/m.
