Introduction To BacteriaThe kingdom Monera is comprised of an amazingly diverse group of organisms, impossible to characterize using a few simple terms. In general, bacteria have the following features:
- all are prokaryotes, meaning they do not contain a nucleus;
- all have a single, circular chromosome, and some have plasmids (small circular pieces of extrachromosomal DNA);
- most have a cell wall made of peptidoglycan;
- most reproduce by binary fission.
We will highlight the major characteristics of this kingdom, but keep in mind how diverse it is. As researchers discover new species and find out more about the nature of the bacteria, we may soon see the kingdom Monera split into several different kingdoms.
