Once the mRNA has been transcribed and processed, the message can now be read and interpreted by the cell. Translation is the process of making a polypeptide chain based on the instructions in the mRNA. We use the term polypeptide here to denote that not all functional proteins are encoded by a single gene (see Chapter 2). Many proteins have subunits, each encoded by a different gene.
