Indicators

An indicator is an organic compound that changes colour as the strength of an acid or a base changes. Acid–base indicators are complex organic compounds that have different colours in solutions of different strength. Universal indicators are mixtures of several indicators. They show several colour changes over a wide range of strengths of the solution values. Table gives a list of commonly used indicators.
