Impulse of A Force

When a ball rebounds from a hard floor, it remains in contact with the floor for very short time which is normally not measurable. The floor exerts a large force on the ball in this short time. Such a force is called an impulsive force (Figure 3.2).

The quantity Ft is called the impulse of the force. Therefore, impulse is a large force acting for a very short interval of time on a body. SI unit of impulse is newton-second (Ns).


Note: that impulse of a force is equal to the change in momentum of the body (not the rate of change as in force).
