# Law of Magnetic Poles

Suspend a bar magnet as shown in Figure 10.8. Bring the south pole of another magnet towards its north pole. You will see that these two attract each other.

Now bring the north pole of the magnet towards the south pole of the suspended magnet. You will again find that these two attract each other.

Bring a north pole of a magnet near the north pole of the suspended bar magnet as shown in Figure 10.9. Now you will see that they repel each other.

Similarly, when the south pole is brought near the south pole of the suspended magnet, they too repel each other. From these observations, we arrive at the following law for magnetic poles.

‘Like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract’.
