Introduction to Our Environment

Environment is the sum of all biotic and abiotic factors that surround and potentially influence organisms without becoming their constituent parts. In other words, the living organisms and their physical surroundings together constitute the environment.

Environmental science is a branch of biology dealing with the interaction between the living organisms and their environment. Ecology is also referred to as ‘Environmental Science’. The term ‘Ecology’ derived from the Greek words ‘oikos’ meaning ‘house’ or ‘place to live’ and ‘logy’ means ‘to study’ was coined by Ernst Haeckel.
