Rinderpest or The Cattle Plague

In Africa, in 1890s, a devastating cattle disease arrived along with the arrival of Europeans. Europeans imported infected cattle from British Asia to feed the Italian soldiers invading Eritrea in East Africa. The disease spread from east to west like forest fire. It reached the Cape (Africa’s southernmost tip) five years later. The disease killed 90 per cent of the cattle. The loss of the livestock compelled the Africans to work under the European colonisers.
