Introduction to Wave Motion and Sound
In our day-to-day life we come across different kinds of motion such as translation, rotation and oscillation. Oscillation is the to and fro motion of a body about its mean position. The motion of a pendulum, the fluttering of leaves, the flapping wings of a bird, etc., are a few examples of oscillatory motion. Here, the motion of the particles repeats itself in equal intervals of time. Any motion that repeats itself in equal intervals of time is called periodic motion. The oscillation of a swing, the vibration of the string of a violin, the up and down motion of a mass suspended from one end of a spring, the vibrations of water molecules in water wave are examples of periodic motion.
