General Studies I
Recently, LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) procedure is being made popular for vision correction. Which one of the following statements in this context is not correct?
|A||LASIK procedure is used to correct refractive errors of the eye|
|B||It is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea|
|C||It reduces a person’s dependence on glasses or contact lenses|
|D||It is a procedure that can be done on the person of any age|
The LASIK technique was made possible by the Colombia-based Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, who, around 1950 in his clinic in Bogota, Colombia, developed the first microkeratome, and developed the technique used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure the called keratomileusis.
LASIK represents advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of vision problems, and are thus viable alternatives to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients.
The medical community has approved LASIK for age 18 and over. More importantly the person’s eye prescription needs to be stable for at least one year prior to surgery.
