When your résumé sheet has been finalized, you are ready to prepare a covering letter to accompany it. Its main function is to serve as a letter of transmittal to accompany your résumé. It should be brief and preferably typewritten. If it is handwritten, it should be very neat and easy-to-read. Do not use xeroxed or carbon-copy letters. Each letter must be individually composed and typed. Use a standard one size of paper to match the size of your résumé sheet.

MYTH: No need to highlight key work aspects about you in your cover letter. Your résumé will do it.
FACT: This is the most important aspect of the cover letter. You must convey your relevant experience and how it will insure your success at the job in question. Place the most relevant part from your background into the cover letter.
