A city centre hotel was seriously damaged by fire last night. Guests were awoken by the fire alarm about 2 a.m. and got out safely by means of the various fire escapes. Fortunately, no one was killed or seriously injured although some people were taken to hospital, suffering from smoke-inhalation. Also, one woman sustained minor burns when flying sparks set fire to her flammable nightdress.
Fire brigades from several districts rushed to the Hotel Anglia immediately the alarm was raised, but it took the firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control. The fire appears to have started in the hotel basement in the storage area, where there was a lot of combustible material stored. This area was already an inferno when the fire engines arrived, but eventually firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the flames.
Obviously the first and most important task was to put the fire out and ensure that everyone was safe. Now investigators will have to try to establish what caused the fire. It is possible that it was caused accidentally. The storage area may have been set alight following some kind of electrical fault, or the conflagration may have been started by a cigarette left smouldering. No one yet knows.
However, police have not ruled out the possibility of arson. There has been a number of fires in the area recently, although this conflagration is the most serious to date. Some of these are obviously the work of the raiser although, as yet, no one has been charged, in the case investigators found a can of petrol and a box of matches at the scene of the fire.
As yet there is no proof that anyone set fire to the hotel deliberately, and nothing has been found to connect this with the other fires. It will take a considerable time for investigators to search through all the embers, looking for clues. If this is the work of arsonists, let us hope they are caught before other lives are put at risk.
What would make it difficult to investigate and conclude that it is a case of arson—in case it is arson?
