The Indian road network is one of the largest network in the world. Today, India has a network of 4.69 million kilometres. The National Highways which comprise only about 2% of the total length of roads now include a road length of 76,800 km and carry more than 40% of the total road traffic. The rural road network connects around 65% of all weather roads. Roads carry nearly 60% of the freight and 80% of the passenger traffic.
