Complex and Compound Sentences

A complex sentence is a sentence consisting of one main clause in which are embedded one or more subordinate clauses.

Example : I know where she lives.


In this sentence, 'where she lives' is a subordinate clause.

When I asked for his opinion, he said that he could not say anything at present.

In this sentence there are two subordinate clauses; when - clause and that - clause.

A compound sentence is a sentence consisting of two or more main clauses. The clauses may be linked by coordinating conjunctions. There may be no connectives between them as in, They may be linked by a conjunct as Smooth cotton sheets feel good.

Fleecy blankets feel warm.


Example: I called at least ten times yesterday; however the line was not free.
