a. There are very few references about allopurinol use in organ preservation & transplant.
b. It is used to reduce the levels of uric acid following mycophenolate therapy. It may be given to increase the duration of azathioprine therapy.
c. But its per se use in organ preservation is not mentioned. Considering the Xanthine oxidase inhibiting property it can be labeled as anti-oxidant .
d. Allopurinol is a free radical scavenger, suppresses the production of TNF-alpha and down regulates the expression of ICAM-1 and P2X, receptors on monocyte/macrophages. ICAM-1 serves as a ligand for LFA-1 (on T lymphocytes), allowing proper antigen presentation.
