a. Middle mediastinum: - The middle mediastinum contains the following structures: lymph nodes, trachea, esophagus, azygos vein, Vena cavae, posterior heart and aortic arch. The most common middle mediastinal mass is enlarged lymph nodes (Lymphadenopathy). Middle mediasinal mass include.
i. Lymph node enlargement ii. Bronchogenic cyst
iii. Pericardial cyst iv. Aortic arch aneurysm Coronary/pulmonary aneurysm
v. Azygous vein enlargement i
Note: Though most common middle mediastinal mass is enlarged lymph nodes, In children the most common middle mediastinal mass is duplication cysts (Bronchogenic cyst or esophageal duplication cysts or neuroenteric cysts).
• Overall most common mediastinal masses are neurogenic tumors (20%) followed by thymomas (19%), primary cysts (18%), lymphomas (13%) and germ cell tumors (10%).
• Most of the mediastinal masses are located in the anterior mediastinum followed by the posterior (25%) and middle (19% ).
