Confirmation of elevation of alkaline phosphatase of hepatic origin is by
a. Alkaline phosphatase — arises from bone, intestine, liver and placenta.
b. In obstructive liver disease (jaundice) or biliary cirrhosis-marked increased in Alk-phosphatase
c. An increase of both 5’-nucleotidase and Alk. phosphatase is consistent with hepatobiliary source
d. of enzyme elevation
e. In Liver disease, GGT (gamma-glutamyl trans-peptidase) correlates with Alk-phosphatase level
f. and is the most sensitive indication of biliary tract disease.
g. However, elevation of GGT are non specific and may be associated with pancreatic, cardiac, renal and pulmonary disorders as well as DM and alcoholism.
