Ideal length for a above elbow amputation is
|A||Atleast 3.8 cm proximal to the elbow|
|B||3.8 cm distal to the greater tuberosity|
|C||At the level of the deltoid tubercle|
|D||At the level of the condyles|
Atleast 3.8 cm proximal to the elbow
a. It should be noted that the prosthesis with which a patient having a above elbow amputation is fitted include an a inside elbow lock mechanism.
b. The elbow lock mechanism is used to stabilize the joint in full extension, full flexion or a position in between.
c. The elbow lock mechanism extends about 3.8 cm distally from the end of the prosthetic socket.
d. Therefore in performing above elbow amputation the level of bone section should be at least 3.8 cm proximal to the elbow joint to allow room for this mechanism
