Interleukin - 1
a. Also known as leucocyte activating factor (LAF) or B cell activating factor (BAF).
b. Principally secreted by macrophages and monocytes; and epithelial cells.
c. Other sources are B-lymphocytes, fibroblasts and Endothelial cells.
d. Immunological effects of IL-1
i. Activation of T cells for the production of IL - 2.
ii. B cell proliferation and antibody synthesis
iii. Neutrophil chemotaxis and increased PMN release from bone marrow.
iv. Increases body temperature (important endogenous pyrogen).
v. Bone marrow cell proliferation
vi. Induction of acute phase protein.
