Mallet finger occurs due to tear of the

a. Mallet finger is also called base ball finger. This result form injury to the extensor tendon of the terminal phalanx.
b. It may be due to direct trauma but more often following tendon rupture when the finger tip is forcibly bent during active extension perhaps while tucking the blankets under the mattress or trying to catch a ball
