Melioidosis is caused by
a. Melioidosis is caused by Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) pseudomallei, also called as Whitmore’s bacillus.
b. This bacterium is specifically found in certain ecological niches-soil and water of South-East Asian countries.
c. Paddy field workers prone to infection
d. Acquisition occurs through skin/ inhalation/ ingestion
e. Able to produce latent subclinical infection that can reactivate several years later.
f. Most common manifestation is a pulmonary disease like TB.
g. Pfeiffer’s bacillus is H. influenza.
h. Johne’s bacillus is M. bovis.
