a. Following most abdominal operation, the motility of gastrointestinal tract is transiently impaired.
b. The proposed mechanism for transient dysmotility are surgical stress induced sympathetic reflexes, inflammatory response, mediator release and analgesic / anaesthetic effects.
c. The return of normal motility follows the characteristic temporal sequence with small intestine motility removing to normal within first 24 hours after laparotomy.
d. The gastric motility return to normal after 48 hours of surgery.
