Which of the following drug can be used with MAO inhibitors? (AIIMS May 2009)
|D||Tyramine containing food|
a. Carbamazepine is an iminostilbene derivative and is used commonly as a mood stabilizer and antiepileptic drug. It blocks sodium channels in same manner as phenytoin does.
b. The drug is well absorbed and forms 10,11 epoxide as a toxic metabolite. The drug can induce its own metabolism. Valproate can induce its metabolism and can cause carbamazepine failure.
c. Carbamazepine is the drug of choice for partial seizures and neuralgias. The drug also has good efficacy in generalized seizures also (BG Katzung’ 10th Edition, 2010).
Table: drug interactions of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Following drugs can potentiate MAO inhibitors)
c. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) – Fluoxetine, paroxetine
d. Sertraline etC.
e. Sumatriptan (5HT1b/1d agonist)
f. All serotonergic agents (e.g. methysergide)
