The new GRE verbal section is no longer a vocabulary test that requires you to memorize hundreds of words and be able to recognize and define them out of context. Antonyms and analogies have been eliminated entirely from the test in lieu of questions ETS believes will test your ability to use higher-level thinking. The emphasis of the new questions is on reading—how well you understand what you have read and how well you apply analytical skills to solve problems based on that reading.
However, don’t think you’ve escaped vocabulary completely! You’ll still need to brush up on some definitions in order to ace the text completion section, which tests your ability to place correct vocabulary words in the context of a sentence or paragraph.
